As many know, we are building our first plastic film recycling facility in Connersville, Indiana. We expect our first line to be operational in the coming weeks. Want to know why I think mechanical recycling is the best technology for polyethylene film? Here are five reasons mechanical recycling is a great choice:
1. Waste Reduction: We divert waste from landfills and incinerators by recycling polyethylene film, reducing overall plastic waste.
2. Established Technology: Mechanical recycling is a well-established process making it a practical and scalable solution today.
3. Innovation: There are many opportunities to apply material science and engineering to make mechanically recycled polyethylene high quality and cost-effective to support packaging innovation including food packaging.
4. Consumer Awareness: The process is easy to explain to consumers, which can enhance public support and participation in recycling programs.
5. Lower Carbon Footprint: There is promising evidence that mechanical recycling of polyethylene film can use less energy when compared to producing virgin plastic, which helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For example, a study produced by the Association of Plastic Recyclers and Franklin Associates* concluded that mechanical recycling has 30% of the greenhouse gas emissions of virgin plastic.
These factors make mechanical recycling a viable and sustainable option for managing polyethylene film waste.
