NOVA Chemicals was recognized in the Food/Beverage Award category for our SURPASS® HPs667-AB resin which, in combination with the HyperBarrier™ coating formulations, enabled COPAR Smart Packaging (COPAR) to deliver a coated paper package with a much thinner PE layer than competitive barrier PE grades, while still achieving the moisture and oxygen barrier needed for shelf life. With stricter international regulations requiring lower levels of PE content in packaging, this reduction in thickness has the potential to enter previously unrecyclable structures into a fibre recycling stream.
The HyperBarrier™ coating technology was developed by Smart Planet Technologies, a global consumer and industrial packaging engineering company. This technology is added to our SURPASS® HPs667-AB during extrusion coating onto paper by COPAR, an Australian-based company focused on sustainable packaging solutions. COPAR implements our resin in this technology to reduce the need for multi-layered plastic.
Our HPs667-AB resin is typically used in cast film extrusion and barrier molding applications and is known for its excellent moisture barrier at 0.16 g/100”/24 hrs. In this innovation, the addition of the HyperBarrier® additive to the HPs667-AB results in exceptional OTR barrier in the same range as EVOH and other high barrier media. The melt index and cleanliness of the HPs667-AB also lends itself to the processes of extrusion coating and lamination which enables its usage in paper coating. Combining the HPs667-AB and the HyperBarrier™ allows for paper packaging with improved shelf life for brand owners and converters of packed goods, like dry foods, snacks, liquid packaging, and dairy.
