Our 2022 ESG Report: Reshaping Plastics is a big deal. In it, we detailed our progress towards our NOVA 2030 strategy goals of increasing sales of recycled polyethylene, decarbonizing our assets on the path to net-zero, and becoming a Top 30 Company in Canada. We launched an employee diversity census to better understand our employees and address their needs. We received recognition for safety performance and sustainable practices. This is also the first ESG report that includes an aligned Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD).“NOVA Chemicals has set out to achieve bold ESG ambitions by 2030, and we are proud of the substantive work we have accomplished to date,” said Jennifer Woolfsmith, NOVA Chemicals’ Vice President of Sustainability. “Plastics continue to play an essential role in our daily lives with many benefits to people around the world, and NOVA believes businesses like ours have a responsibility to reshape those plastics for a more sustainable world and a low-carbon, zero-plastic-waste future.”

With the launch of our SYNDIGO™ recycled polyethylene (rPE) resins and ASTUTE™ plastomer resins, we are increasing market share of rPE products. These resins are an essential building block of all-polyethylene packaging, opening the door for more mono-material recyclable packaging options.

We achieved our best-ever combined recordable injury rate performance and a combined lost time injury rate of zero, representing a 100% reduction over the last five years. At our world-class Advanced SCLAIRTECH technology facility, we reached our best-ever safety performance including a recordable injury-free run of over 1.3 million exposure hours. In recognition of our zero non-accident releases (NARs) performance, we were awarded a Chemical Transportation Safety Pinnacle Award 2022. We also received a CN Safe Handling Award 2022 for transportation safety practices.

Increasing transparency around our sustainability and ESG efforts also resulted in our second Silver medal award from EcoVadis, a globally recognized sustainability ratings provider. NOVA Chemicals placed in the top 11% of the companies they assessed in 2022. Their ratings methodology is based on several standards including the United National Global Compact® (UNGC), which NOVA Chemicals also joined last year. This confirms our support of the UNGC’s Ten Principles of corporate sustainability concerning Human Rights, Labour, Environment, and Anti-Corruption.

Progress Toward our 2030 Goals

Building on our strong 2022 ESG performance, NOVA Chemicals has made further progress toward our 2030 goals so far in 2023. We have signed our second renewable power Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) with TC Energy Corporation for solar power and associated emissions offsets. “This cross-industry collaborative agreement with TC Energy serves as yet another step along NOVA Chemicals’ roadmap to 2030, demonstrating our commitment to working with trusted partners in achieving our environmental and sustainability aspirations,” added Woolfsmith. NOVA Chemicals has another VPPA with Shell Energy for wind-turbine generated power.

We have also begun expanding our recycling business with a new mechanical recycling facility in Connersville, Indiana operated by Novolex and a feasibility study for an advanced recycling plant in Ontario, Canada with Plastic Energy.
